Writing good quiz questions: rules and before/after examples
A good quiz question tests one concept, puts the full problem in the stem, offers one defensible correct answer, and surrounds it with distractors that represent real mistakes. Most bad questions fail in predictable ways — double-barreled stems, giveaway grammar, implausible wrong answers, or trick negatives — and every one of those failures is fixable with a rewrite, not a new question.
What separates a good quiz question from a bad one?
A quiz question has one job: a person who knows the material gets it right, and a person who doesn't gets it wrong. Bad questions break that link in both directions — knowledgeable takers miss them because of ambiguous wording, and clueless takers ace them by pattern-matching on grammar and option length. The eight rules below close those gaps, each with a real before/after rewrite.
Rule 1: Test one concept per question
Before: "Who wrote Romeo and Juliet, and in what century was it first performed?" If a student gets it wrong, you don't know which half they missed — and a student who knows only the author has no correct option to pick.
After: "Who wrote Romeo and Juliet?" Ask the century in a separate question if it matters. Two clean data points beat one muddy one.
Rule 2: Put the problem in the stem, not in the options
Before: "The mitochondria: (a) make protein (b) produce the cell's energy (c) store DNA (d) digest waste." The stem says nothing; the taker must evaluate four mini-statements.
After: "What is the primary function of the mitochondria?" — a taker who knows the answer can state it before reading a single option. That's the test of a good stem: it works as a standalone question.
Rule 3: Make every distractor a plausible mistake
Before: "What is the capital of Australia? (a) Canberra (b) Paris (c) Mars (d) Banana." Two options are jokes, so the real question is a coin flip between Canberra and whatever else sounds Australian.
After: "(a) Canberra (b) Sydney (c) Melbourne (d) Perth." Sydney is the famous misconception, and the others are plausible big cities. Now the question separates people who actually know from people who guess the most famous name.
The best source of distractors is your takers' past wrong answers. Collect the mistakes students or trainees actually make — in homework, in discussion, in earlier quizzes — and promote those errors to answer options. Each distractor then diagnoses a specific misconception.
Rule 4: Keep options parallel in length and grammar
Before: "Why do leaves change color in autumn? (a) cold (b) wind (c) because chlorophyll breaks down and reveals the yellow and orange pigments underneath (d) rain." Every test-taker on earth picks the long one.
After: make all four options full clauses of similar length: "(a) Cold nights freeze the green pigment" / "(b) Chlorophyll breaks down, revealing other pigments" / "(c) Trees absorb the green pigment back into branches" / "(d) Sunlight bleaches the leaves over summer." The correct answer no longer advertises itself.
Rule 5: Avoid "all of the above" and "none of the above"
"All of the above" lets a taker who recognizes just two correct options deduce the answer without knowing the third. "None of the above," when correct, tells you nothing about whether the taker knows the actual answer. If several answers are genuinely correct, use a multiple-select question and ask takers to choose all that apply — that tests the full set honestly.
Rule 6: Kill the trick negatives
Before: "Which of the following is not a non-renewable energy source?" Double negatives test parsing, not physics.
After: "Which of these is a renewable energy source?" If you must use a negative, use only one and make it impossible to miss: "Which of these is NOT a mammal?"
Rule 7: Don't leak the answer with grammar
Before: "A baby kangaroo is called an: (a) joey (b) cub (c) calf (d) kit." The "an" eliminates three options instantly.
After: end the stem with "called a/an ___" or rewrite: "What is a baby kangaroo called?" The same leak happens with singular/plural agreement and repeated keywords between stem and correct option — proofread for all three.
Rule 8: Match difficulty to what you're measuring
Recall questions ("What year...") are fine for facts, but if the skill you care about is application, the stem should present a scenario: "A customer requests a refund 45 days after purchase. According to the policy, what should you do?" One scenario question often tells you more than five definition questions.
